Service and Guidance Center in Kherbet Kanafar

This center was built as part of the IRWA project funded by the European Union between 2003 and 2006. It aims at providing guidance and technical support to farmers in the Southern Bekaa Irrigation Project.

The center includes:

  • A 160-hectare test field to carry out agricultural and irrigation experiments
  • A fully-equipped 400m2 soil and water laboratory
  • A weather observatory
  • A 650m2 administration building equipped with a conference room to hold technical guiding seminars, and a 450m2 warehouse to store machines.
  • Two test fields in Qaraoun/the lower dam over an area of 37 dunam: a 25-dunam olive field and a 12-dunam vineyard to test 16 types of grapes
  • An area for wetlands (1 hectare) to solve river water pollution (under construction)
  • The center aims to:
  • Guide farmers through the use of modern irrigation and agricultural techniques through regular seminars and the establishment of agricultural test fields.
  • Hosting researchers and students to carry out scientific experiments
  • Cleaning the river course for a specific period (2003-2007 as part of IRWA)
  • Carrying out experiments to introduce new crops

Activities of the Center:

  • Following up on regular agricultural activities for holdings and crops owned or followed up by the center: nectarine and almond field (Kherbet Kanafar), olive field, and a test field for table grapes (lower Qaraoun dam)
  • Agricultural lab activities (soil and water analysis)
  • Many agricultural activities including environmental and agricultural guidance seminars, field days and field observations, agricultural experiments and coordination meetings on the water management.
  • The center has successful collaborations with institutions and programs in the public, private and civil sectors, among them are the Litani River Basin Management Support, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Lebanese Agricultural Research Institute, the School of Higher Education for Mediterranean Agronomy Engineers, the Faculties of Agriculture in the Lebanese and Arab Universities, the Union of Lake Municipalities and the Cooperatives for the Users of Southern Bekaa Irrigation Project.
  • Welcoming delegations making research visits to meet and study cooperation areas and opportunities.
  • Welcoming university interns who would benefit from the services of the center for their research or senior projects.
